QUINOA: Super Food and Health Alternative!

QuinoaQuinoa is one of the most recent food miracles discovered by our society. Cataloged since 1996 by the FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) as one of the most promising crops for humanity, this super food is full of benefits that we must know as soon as possible to incorporate it into our daily diet.

But let´s start from the beginning. Quinoa is a seed that grows in the Latin American Andes, rich in vitamins and minerals. It is not genetically modified, has no gluten and is usually grown organically. It´s called “pseudo cereal” because despite of being a seed it can be eaten as a cereal, containing about 16gr of protein per 100gr of unsaturated fats. It tastes delicious, is perfectly adaptable to sweet and savory combinations, and offers numerous health benefits.

Among the properties of Quinoa we can mention: it has a high level of protein (about 23%); It contains minerals (calcium, magnesium and iron), vitamins (C, E, B1, B2 and niacin) and phosphorus; It is also rich in amino acids and an important source of soluble and insoluble fiber; and finally it has a very low glycemic index.
